Boundary wall of Gokulpuri metro station collapses, leaving one person dead; DMRC to award Rs 15 lakh to relatives

On Thursday morning, a section of the Gokulpuri metro station’s border wall collapsed, leaving one person dead and four injured.

Following the incident, five persons were admitted to the GTB Hospital; four of them are receiving treatment, while one person was pronounced dead. The deceased was identified as 53-year-old Karawal Nagar resident Vinod Kumar.

According to the officers, the incident happened at 11 a.m. when a section of the eastern border wall of the metro station collapsed onto the road below.

DCP (Northeast) Joy Tirkey stated, “Four people were injured while one person was trapped under the debris and suffered grievous injuries while others sustained minor injuries.” The collision also caused damage to a couple bikes.

The officer said that the trapped person was freed from beneath the rubble with the assistance of police officers and members of the public. “When the tragedy happened, he was riding a scooty. The DCP stated, “He was rushed to the GTB Hospital.”

According to DCP Tirkey, an investigation is being conducted, and a case would be brought under the appropriate provisions.

Four fire tenders were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call at 11 a.m., according to Delhi Fire Services Chief Atul Garg. While two injured individuals were already being transported to the hospital by members of the public, two more were saved by fire department personnel.

There is still a Delhi Fire Service and police unit at the location.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a statement that two DMRC employees in the Civil Department, a manager and a junior engineer, have been placed on leave while an investigation is conducted. Additionally, the DMRC will provide compensation of Rs 50,000 for mild injuries, Rs 2.5 lakh for severe injuries, and Rs 15 lakh for the surviving family members of the deceased.

Temporarily closed is the Gokulpuri metro station, which is on the Pink Line. There is only one line serving the rail service between Maujpur and Shiv Vihar. The DMRC said that train services are operating properly on the remaining portion of the Pink Line.
